Arthur Vernon Washburn 85, of Grants Pass died January 22, 2011 in his home peacefully surrounded by his family. Service with military honors will be held Monday, January 31st, 1:00 PM at Eagle Point National Cemetery, Eagle Point, Oregon Arthur was born on June 16, 1925 in Durango, Colorado to James and Rose Washburn. At age 8 his family moved to Glendale, California where he met his wife Sonya Sward in elementary school, they married in 1946. Arthur attended Glendale High School and then he went to technical school to become an automobile mechanic. At age 17 he enlisted in the United States Army. Serving during WWII he spent time in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the Bronze Star, rifleman medal and the Purple Heart. After his honorable discharged in 1946 he went to work for Hughes Aircraft as an electrician and cost estimator. From there he started his own business in Burbank and in Sunland, California. He then went to work for David Hines Auto in Hollywood, California. When he retired he moved his family to Grants Pass where he bought a ranch and raised cattle and horses. Eventually they moved to their current home on 3 acres. Arthur loved car racing, working with his hands building go-carts, fishing and camping. In addition to his wife survivors include 2 sons, Eric Washburn of Grants Pass and Chris Washburn of Hermiston, Oregon; daughter Lynnaya Fleming of Grants Pass; 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. His son Vernon Arthur Washburn preceded him in death.
