Dennis Charles Holthus

November 22, 1935 — August 6, 2016

Dennis Holthus, age 80, of Grants Pass, Oregon, went peacefully to be with the Lord in the early morning of August 6th, at his home. He was born on November 22, 1935, the youngest child of Harry and Ida Holthus, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor's Degree in Forestry. On November 1, 1958, he married the love of his life, Carol H. Stubenberg at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. Dennis began his career with the U.S. Forest Service in Libby, Montana. Shortly after moving to Montana, he was drafted in the U.S. Army where he spent two years living and serving his country in Mineral Wells, Texas, prior to returning to his position in Libby. He subsequently held positions with the U.S. Forest Service in Wisdom, Montana; Colville, Washington; Halfway, Oregon; and eventually retiring as the Illinois Valley District Ranger in Cave Junction, Oregon, in December of 1992. Throughout the years he was a member of several community organizations including Toastmasters in Colville, Washington; Lions Club in Halfway, Oregon; and Kiwanis in Cave Junction, Oregon, where he served as president from 1984-1985. His love of the outdoors extended beyond his career with the U.S. Forest Service to his enjoyment of fishing the lakes of Minnesota, hunting deer, elk, and moose in Montana, and maintaining his 5 acre property in the Illinois Valley. Dennis had several dogs he loved during his lifetime, especially his Golden Lab, "Lucky." He enjoyed listening to music and attending "Community Concerts" in Grants Pass. He shared a passion for the Minnesota Vikings with his son, watching many games together throughout the years. He also enjoyed bowling with his wife and participating in various leagues. His church and his faith in God were very important to him which he exemplified by serving as president of the congregation and most recently as an elder. His gentle spirit, kind heart, sense of humor, and loving smile will be greatly missed. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Ida Holthus, and his sister, Marcella. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Carol; daughters, Sherry (Dennis) Wildey and Stacy (Forrest) Warren; son, Steve (Tia) Holthus; granddaughters, Jentry Holthus and Shelby (Andy) Van Sickle; and great-grandson, Everett Van Sickle. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on August 20, 2016, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 5th St. and Evelyn Ave., Grants Pass, Oregon. If desired, memorial contributions can be made in honor of Dennis to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
