Ellis Cookman

January 15, 1957 — April 13, 2024

Jacksonville

Ellis Noe Cookman, born on January 15, 1957, in California, but raised amidst the creeks and forests of Azalea, Oregon, passed away on April 13, 2024. Ellis was the fourth of four boys in his family, preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Mary Cookman, and his older brother Evan Cookman.

He is survived by his loving wife, Janean Cookman, with whom he cultivated a strong 40-year marriage since September 10, 1983, and without whom he could never order food at a restaurant. Ellis leaves behind a legacy through his children: son Lee Cookman and his wife Rory, along with their six children Elisha, Eva, Maisey, Willoughby, Ahijah, and Titus, and daughter Angela Cookman-Taylor and her boyfriend Brian Mattson.

Ellis was a man of many passions. Whether he was cruising on his Harley or cutting trails in Jacksonville on his Beta, his love for motorcycle riding was lifelong. A skilled deer and elk hunter, Ellis also spent decades trekking Oregon’s mountain ranges with friends, including his best friend from high school. He loved hiking along rivers and sleeping under the stars, always leaving a campsite seemingly untouched for others to enjoy.

Deeply devoted to God's Word, Ellis spent each day listening to multiple online teachers and preachers to enrich his knowledge and transform his life. Recognizable by his hat, shoulder-length hair, and equally long beard, Ellis was always in blue jeans, unless he was in hunting gear or his St. Vincent's Hospital plumbing uniform. For 36 years, Ellis served as the plumber at the hospital in Portland, Oregon, touching every pipe in every square inch of those buildings, while the unforgettable jingle of his key ring played along with his boot scuffs down the halls.

Ellis Cookman (aka “Old Man River” and “Slider”) will be remembered for his unwavering faith, love for his family, and unmatched outdoorsmanhood. He passed away peacefully in his home in Jacksonville, Oregon, in the shadow of the southern Oregon mountains he loved outside his front window like he always dreamed. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, integrity, and strength that will be cherished by all who knew him.
