John Riley Barnette

October 22, 1935 — October 25, 2020

John Riley Barnette, born October 22, 1935 in El Dorado, Arkansas, passed away peacefully during his sleep in the early hours of October 25th. His music career started in the Church that he grew up attending, Liberty Baptist in Lawson, Arkansas, where his father Wilbur Barnette was the Pastor. While living in Grants Pass, Oregon he formed his own band, Bob and the Vets! His favorite musical artist of all-time was Elvis Presley and John-with some prodding from others sometimes being necessary-would pick up any guitar you handed to him, tune it up and start singing and strumming away. He clearly took joy in entertaining the group with his consummate showmanship in employ and on full display. Career highlights include playing with Charlie Rich in Mississippi and cutting two singles with Vance records, “Shadow My Baby” and “Whispering Blues” in 1963. John moved to Bellflower in Southern California in the early-60’s, starting work with Mayfair Market’s, transferring to grants pass Oregon in the mid 60’s where he met several lifelong friends. He followed good friends to Arcata, CA where he worked at Murphys.moved to Westwood Market with the Rosebrook’s family for many years enjoying his customers and coworkers. John’s great loves in life were music, God, Family and Country where he served in the Air Force as a jet mechanic from 1954-1958 stationed in San Antonio, Texas. Always ready to perform and entertain the crowd, John Barnette’s exuberance for life will forever live in our hearts and memories. John loved to travel, the outdoors, ocean beaches, cooking and entertaining family. He was a helpful encouraging loving man!
