Joy Patricia (Slocum) New passed away peacefully on May 9, 2026.

She was born on May 18, 1939, in Middletown, New York, one of six children born to Simon (“Slim”) Slocum and Lucille (Eckerson) Slocum. She is survived by her siblings Tom Slocum of Santa Barbara, California; Beverly Gibbs of Northumberland, Pennsylvania, and her husband Eben; and Don Slocum of Mayer, Arizona, and his wife Pat. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Richard Slocum, and John Slocum; John is survived by his wife, Lil and son, Todd.

In September 1960, Joy married Eugene New and moved to Southern California, where they welcomed three children: Mark, Carol, and Susan. It was during her time in California that she became a Christian, and from that point forward, her faith and family remained central throughout her life.

In 1965, the family relocated to Grants Pass, Oregon, where her youngest daughter, Marylee, was born. After living in Oregon for 20 years, Joy later moved to Phoenix, Arizona, and then to Northumberland, Pennsylvania. During these years, she worked in secretarial and bookkeeping roles. While in Phoenix, she was an active member of North Phoenix Baptist Church. In 2004, she relocated to Ventura, California, to be closer to her daughter and family, enjoying the sunny weather and forming lifelong friendships. In December 2025, Joy moved back to Rogue River in southern Oregon, where she loved being close to her son and family and enjoyed her beautiful home at Morrow Heights Assisted Living.

Joy enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She loved music and found joy in writing songs, stories, and poetry. She was also an avid reader, especially of Christian writings, articles, and biographies.

She is survived by her children: Mark New and his wife Lisa of Rogue River, Oregon; Carol Carpenter of Washington; and Susan Capelli of Ojai, CA, together with Susan’s beloved husband and her cherished son-in-law, Stan, who has since passed away. She is also survived by ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Marylee Stewart.

Joy’s faith remained a guiding light throughout her life.

“The God of all Comfort gave His Son to die for me,Filled my life with peace and pardon, all because of Calvary.Sins all forgiven, what comfort to my soul,There’s for me no condemnation, Jesus paid all.”
